What Will You Learn in the Mechanical Engineering 4+1 Program?

  • Build a solid foundation in robotics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, machine design, manufacturing and materials science.
  • Develop an advanced understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Create new concepts and hone technical writing and oral presentation skills through thesis research and project completion.
  • Learn and demonstrate high professional, ethical and moral standards required for industry.

Admission Process

You will declare mechanical engineering as an undergraduate student. By the end of your junior year, but preferably by the end of your sophomore year, you should apply to the ME 4+1 master’s program by contacting Yong Zhu, associate professor of mechanical engineering, at yong.zhu@mblayst.com.

Curriculum Requirements

During your senior year (or earlier with advisor approval), you will complete at least two master’s level technical courses (6 credits).

These six credits will be in addition to the 130 credits required for the BS in mechanical engineering and are not counted toward the bachelor’s degree.

You will then complete an additional 24 credits in one year to satisfy the full, 30-credit requirement for the master’s in mechanical engineering.

Tech Exploration

You will have the opportunity to pursue topics of personal interest through technical electives in areas including thermal sciences/fluid mechanics, robotics/automation, micro/nano engineering and computational/numerical methods.

Deep Dive

Establish the base for your educational success with your bachelor’s degree work, gaining a solid understanding of mathematics, the sciences and engineering. Build on that strong foundation through investigative research targeted to your career goals in the master’s-level classes.

Hands-on Learning

Gain vital hands-on experience throughout the 4+1 program while you work in cross-disciplinary, state-of-the-art labs in our Mark Engineering Center. Pursue internship opportunities to put your skills to work in the real world. Cap off your education with a three-credit master’s project or six-credit thesis.
